Sonic Movie Maker is the third game in Sonic Dreams Collection. A basic first-person movie maker, it allows players to record up to six seconds of video using different props, speech bubbles, and scenarios. While initially appearing innocuous, exploration past the boundaries of the stages reveal disturbing leftovers from the fictional developer, and reflect a unique perspective on the odd sexual landscape associated with the Sonic the Hedgehog fandom.

Description[]

Sonic Movie Maker was many years ahead of its time, technically speaking. MJSTUDIO envisioned a movie making program for players to explore & share their desires with the rest of the world.

Internal notes suggest that SEGA executives pulled the plug after learning about some of Sonic Movie Maker's darker subplots.

Gameplay[]

Upon beginning a stage players must first find and acquire the camera power-up before filmmaking can begin; generally the camera is located in plain sight of players. Once obtained, up to six seconds of footage can be recorded by holding right-click to focus and left-click to record. Recording is linear and cannot be rewound within the scenario. The camera can also be zoomed by scrolling the mousewheel, and numerous video filters can be applied with the F key. Created movies can be exported to Twitter, and defaults to the message "Check out my new Sonic movie! #sonicdreams".

Tails

Sonic Movie Maker's stages depict the player's original character in a variety of surreal and uncomfortable scenarios. If an original character has not yet been created in Make My Sonic and uploaded to SegaNet, the game will substitute Sonic the Hedgehog in their place. Alongside the original character, other familiar Sonic characters are found through the seven available stages, and depending on the scenario will automatically gyrate to simulate movement. Grabbing these characters and pushing them into characters of the opposite gender will cause them to moan and emit hearts - with the notable exception of Miles "Tails" Prower, who exhibits this behavior with all characters.

The overly-responsive physics engine allows for easy glitch jumping to inaccessible areas, most easily utilized by frequently jumping atop a small held object. Areas outside the intended boundaries are often empty, although some contain developer messages, strange Eggys, and other surreal occurrences. Going even further, players can unlock the Fuckball, a volatile and seemingly-unfinished item that corrupts the very programming of the stage itself.

Once players have finished filmmaking in any given stage, they must then navigate to the large red exit door. Upon entering, the stage is completed, with Sonic characters seen watching the new film in a small home theater. Upon completing all Sonic Movie Maker's stages, a congratulatory final scene is shown where these characters (alongside the original character) excitedly writhe together in a "party" atop the skyscraper featured in the game's title. A banner reading Congratulation - It Takes A Village has been propped up in the background, and from here players are finally given the option to sign Chao Garden's guestbook and complete the Sonic Movie Maker]] experience.

Props[]

Main article: Prop.

A variety of props are found throughout the game's seven stages, and can be used for the purposes of creative filmmaking. Props can consist of various objects associated with that scenario, floating speech bubbles used to add context to a scene, and even the ragdolls of Sonic characters. These props can be grabbed and posed to assist in filmmaking, with the mousewheel used move objects towards or away from the player. Some will even require completing a request for a nearby Eggy to be unlocked.

Fuckball[]

Magic Z Ball

The Fuckball is an unstable blue sphere unlocked in Prom that allows players to glitch and distort the proportions of any scenario it is spawned in. Once discovered, it is unlocked as a permanent ability in Sonic Movie Maker. The Fuckball can be spawned in any of game's stages by pressing the Z key. Once the Fuckball spawns on the level, it is unable to be despawned, and continued pressing of the Z key will only respawn the Fuckball on the player, bouncing them upwards or through collision. Interacting with the Fuckball for too long often crashes the game entirely.

The object gains its name from its internal name of fuckball. It appears as an Eggy eye permanently enclosed in a mess of glitched blue textures constantly failing to properly position themselves around the eye. These textures appear relative in size to distance from the player, resulting in the textures seeming to grow incredibly large when the Fuckball leaves close proximity to the player. The Fuckball also introduces heavy static and glitched audio at full volume, and plays a loud cymbal crash upon spawning, making its use purposefully irritating. The sound it produces (a heavily-distorted sample from Jennifer Lopez' "Waiting for Tonight") also appears in the opening sequence of the Arcane Kids game Perfect Stride.

List of stages[]

Image Title Description
Backyard Backyard Backyard is Sonic Movie Maker's first stage, serving as a general introduction to the game's mechanics. The stage begins in a small movie set featuring a diapered Original Character in an stereotypical American backyard, complete with white picket fence, doghouse, and numerous footballs. Behind the set’s backdrop lie darkly-suggestive speech bubbles placed in front of a tripod-mounted camera, setting the tone for much of Sonic Movie Maker’s implied and uncomfortable storytelling.
Prom Prom Prom is Sonic Movie Maker's second stage, set at a teenage prom event starring several Sonic the Hedgehog characters. Much like the previous stage, Prom initially seems innocuous, but further exploration behind the scenes of the dance reveals further implications of mature content.
Hotel Hotel Hotel is Sonic Movie Maker's third stage, and seemingly shows a continuation of the previous stage Prom. Set in a seedy, low-budget motel, the player explores the aftermath of an alcohol-fueled party, and eventually discovers an "orgy" of gyrating Sonic characters atop the bed.
Feeding Feeding Feeding is Sonic Movie Maker's fourth stage, and takes place atop a dark metal platform hoisted high above Prom's dance floor. Sonic the Hedgehog is strapped to a metal table, and the player is tasked with force feeding various foods to Sonic. As his belly gradually begins to inflate, the player is eventually presented the character of Miles "Tails" Prower to feed to Sonic, who swallows him whole.
Birthing Birthing Birthing is Sonic Movie Maker's fifth stage. Following the events of Feeding, Sonic the Hedgehog is laying in a hospital room below a pullrope. With each pull of the rope, a previously-fed object will be "birthed" from Sonic with a loud pop. After birthing enough objects, Tails will ask to be rescued from Sonic's belly, and with another pull of the rope is forcefully ejected back into the world.
Crib Crib Crib is Sonic Movie Maker's sixth stage, beginning in the dark, dripping insides of an unknown creature, and with only the light of a found twinkling Chaos Emerald to guide them. In the process of exploring the winding organic tunnels, players discover Big the Cat, illogically lodged deep in one of the corridors. Further exploration eventually reveals a hole in the squishy floor, where players fall into a soft baby crib. Looking upward, it is revealed that players have just been "birthed" from the insides of Rouge the Bat.
Roommates Roommates Roommates is Sonic Movie Maker's seventh stage. Labelled as downloadable content, it is unlocked upon completion of My Roommate Sonic, and is essentially the same setting played from a different perspective - but with the player shrunken down to roughly the size of an Eggy. Both Sonic the Hedgehog and the Roommate (a regular human with a camera for a head, representing the player's perspective from My Roommate Sonic) sit beside each other on the couch staring at the player, their necks turning to keep players in direct eye contact at all times.
